I managed to be home this year on the weekend of the Irish Picnic. It's put on by the local Catholic Church, St. Patrick's, and has been going on for a very long time (the church and school are 153 years old, not sure about the picnic).
This year my cousin Janna's husband, Joe Smith (yes, that IS his real name) and his band performed. I really REALLY enjoyed the music. The band is very talented and I just love to hear Joe sing. His voice reminds me of the music I grew up on, the 'Old Timey' country style voice.
I was only able to get a little video, the rest is audio. I would also like it if someone would tell me the names of each of these songs so I can properly label them. I am including a few that I was able to get decent audio on. Some of them, however, have background "yakking." Not much I can do about that.
Song 1 (Song title please)
Next Song - this one is Joe's first solo (Statue of a Fool by Jack Greene)
The rest of the songs here have no video. My camera doesn't do well in low lighting, but the audio is good. You can click the little Play button on, or below, the file to get the music to play.
Song 3 (Don't Close Your Eyes) - click to play
Song 4 - Joe (Can't You See)
Song 5 (Somethin' You Got)
Song 6 (Keep Your Hands to Yourself) This is a fun song.
Song 7 (song title please)
Song 8 - Joe (Old Time Rock N Roll)
I love this song. I had trouble uploading this one. Click the link below to listen to the song in your browser.

Allie's Birthday
Allie almost shared a birthday with Papa - by about 12 minutes. Today we celebrated, she got a gluten free cake with cream cheese frosting and wasn't a bit shy about eating it. Mama's not going to let her have this stuff very often and she's enjoying every minute while she can.

Holy Whatever
I escaped New York with my life - and my luggage. But just barely. Police were everywhere. I've never seen so many of them in one place.
I walked out of my workplace today on 57th and Broadway. I noticed police just milling around in front of the hotel across the street. I thought, "I'm glad I'm not staying there if they need security like that."
The streets were jam packed with people in every direction. People moving fast - it reminded me of a hamster on a treadmill; always moving, but never really going anyplace.
I stood outside my building and waited for the shuttle I ordered. My flight wasn't until 7 pm, and I might have had time to take in one last sight or restaurant, but something made me think twice about that last night, and I ordered the shuttle to come today at 3 o'clock.
I stood there watching Manhattan. Then I noticed the barricades along the street's edge. Were those there before? I don't remember seeing them this morning; but there is a lot of construction on this street...
I got into the van and waited as my driver picked up a few more people. When we pulled into the Hyatt, just around the corner, a SWAT team, camera crew and riot police all hovered near the hotel's entrance. I asked, "What's going on?"
I should probably watch the news now and then, I might learn something.
A man getting into the van was rushing to get his things situated. He said, "My flight doesn't leave until 8 pm," he said, " but the hotel said this is the last Shuttle for the day. The streets are closing in 20 minutes."
"Why?" Silly me. I never know anything.
"Obama. He's supposed to be arriving soon and he's staying here at the Hyatt." It was all starting to make sense.
The man sharing my van was Frank Humphrey, an elected official of NAACP, here in New York for a board meeting.
One hundred years ago the NAACP had their first meeting in New York City. Now they're back to celebrate the 3 digit birthday, with President Obama addressing them at the event. Mr. Humphrey wasn't attending. When we asked why he said, "I met the President last time, I have to get out of this city while I still can. I have a meeting in Milwaukee tomorrow at 8." At the time, I didn't have a clue who the man was. Later I overheard him give his name on a cell phone call.
Traffic in Manhattan was impossible. Mr. Humphrey kept saying, "I hope we make it out before the streets close. We're cutting it awfully close."
We stood cinder-block still in traffic. Our driver got out of the van and tossed a bag of items into a dumpster nearby while we waited for cars to move. A secret service car pulled in behind us and followed a while. What did the driver have in that bag of trash anyway?
The car behind us withdrew, telling the street police to stop the cars just behind us. We were the last vehicle on that street to be let out.
Police began manning the street barricades. People were coming out of buildings, I assumed hoping for a glimpse of the President. I could be standing there, right now, among them. Of course, then I'd be spending another night in Manhattan. Not interested, I haven't slept the whole 3 days I've been here.
It might have been nice to watch the Presidential motorcade bring the President to his hotel on his drive down the streets of Manhattan.
Then again, I've a better view of things with television. Provided I watch it once in a while.

I'm a Dweeb
Here I am in New York - a city full of surprises and random street concerts.
Like today. Paul McCartney did a live concert from the roof of the Ed Sullivan Theater, not far from my hotel.

The concert was at 5:30 pm, impromptu and unannounced. If you were lucky enough to be walking by at the time it started - you got a special treat.
I wasn't that lucky. It's probably one of the only things I would have gone out for had I known about it, but instead, I was busy in my hotel, taking a nap.
How do I always manage to sleep through the important things in life?

Big Apple
Does anyone know why people go to New York, besides the shopping? I'm in Manhattan, my hotel is steps from Madison Ave, just off 57th. I'm near all this stuff and I have no idea what I should do with myself. I walk to work in the morning, stop at salad shop for dinner take out, and go to my hotel room. I go out for Diet Coke to the corner porn shop (ok, magazine shop but it looks like porn and the clientele looks shady too).
So what else should I do? I can't go to the ferry because it's closed by the time I get out of my workshops. Only thing open is shopping.
Did I mention I don't really like to shop?
