Pull my finger, mom

While their dad is upstairs recovering from major heart surgery, the boys decide to 'come clean' on some of their boyhood pranks. Of course, their mom knew the "pull my finger" prank, but was a little shocked to hear some of the more exciting things they did as boys (while also surviving).

It's probably a good thing their dad slept through these stories. Dads can't beat their 50+ year old sons, can they?

The 3Coleman boys at the hospital

This is what visitors to the hospital saw as they entered the main lobby. The water fountain added an especially nice touch, both visually and in accompanying sound.

Good reading

"Can I read you something?"

A simple question, but not one you expect to hear while you are in the shower. Even more surprising is when it is your husband asking you if he can read you a recipe, and he's really excited about it.

We got this lovely package from Miriam and John, full of jams, jellies, rumified fruit, and a cookbook. After we opened everything, it was time for me to get a shower and get ready for lunch with Jean and Al.

Steve couldn't put the cookbook down. He was so interested it in, while I was in the shower he had to bring it in and read a recipe from it, for Potato Polenta soup. "This is that soup I love from Olive Garden. Now I can make it."

Funny how things have changed in 32 years.

Proud Dawg

Andy knew just who this gift came from (Michelle, of course). You should have seen the way he looked at me.

Luckily, the attire is entirely functional. He liked it so well, he wanted to go for a neighborhood walk, even in the rain.

Merry Christmas everyone.

Welcome home Dad

Andy has turned in to a Dad's dog. When Dad leaves, Andy sits in the window with his head between the luvres, and whines after him. When Dad gets home Andy climbs up in his face until Dad either pets or scolds him.

Aren't they cute?

Ode to Blog

Oh, Blog, how I love thee, Let me count the ways.

I love thee because you give me a place to say dumb things, post silly photos and rant about absurd ideas.

I love thee because you alone are able to get an email photo from my phone and make it public to the world in less than 3 seconds.

I love thee because you keep my family (and friend) informed of my whereabouts. Even I don't always know which way I am going.

And especially I love thee because, without you, I would have to write long letters to everyone, and we both know that would never get done.

Oh, Blog, I truly love thee.

Cocoa Crazed

A wise rule of thumb when shopping is to never shop when you are hungry. One added part of that rule should also be to never shop when you have a craving.

Let's just say that, the last time I went to Pavillions I did not consider this last rule. I saw these dark chocolate shot cups and couldn't resist. Problem was, I didn't have anything to put in them - the Brandy bottle was on empty.

That was days ago. We went shopping tonight to get some meat and Dad reminded me about the cups. So I got Brandy and Bailey's. We had some whipping cream in the fridge so I whipped that up, added a little powdered sugar to it, then filled the cups.

Talk about tasty. You can either drink the contents then eat the cups, or pop the whole dang thing in your mouth. Either way, yummy.

They made a great before meal appetizer. I didn't even need to eat one of the truffles you see on the plate. I guess I will save those for after our dinner.

Get Smart

So, I am in New Mexico/Arizona this week. The assignment is at a school located in a city not on a map, nor in the GPS. I was able to 'sort of' find it using Google maps, at least, I found the road that runs by it. The rest was up to me.

I drove 28 miles, through nothing but sage brush and rocky buttes, with an occasional run-down mobile home appearing.

My instructions were to "look for That's a Burger" and then for a bridge. Beyond the bridge, I would see the campus.

Or, should I say, complex. In the middle of nowhere, there appeared 15 buildings, located on both sides of the road. The bridge I mentioned, was an overhead, concrete, foot crossing bridge, from the complex on one side of the road, to the sports arena, on the other side.

The buildings were unmarked. I was told I would be teaching in the CIA building (I am NOT making this up).

On the front doors there were no markings, but on the back door was this one sign. That had to be it.

Inside and down the hallway, I spotted the room where I would be teaching. It was labeled clearly, in case anyone wondered.

So then, I tried to make a phone call, but my shoe was covered with ice. It was, after all, 15 degrees outside.

Viewing Pleasure

A couple of years ago Luke got us a Tivo for Christmas. What a surprise, too! It took me a while to get it connected and subscribe to the service, but once I did, I was hooked. I liked it so much, I took it to Tennessee with me and Dad never saw it again (unless he came to visit).

It hardly seemed fair. I use the Tivo all the time - when I'm home, and when I am not - recording things via the online scheduler, so cleverly designed by Tivo.

When I got back from the country this time, we looked forward to watching our favorite Christmas flicks, but I couldn't help feeling just a little guilty that my beloved Tivo remained behind. I had sequestered its service and was not about to relinquish it.

So I ordered Direct TV's DVR service. It was installed at the Cowley house on Saturday. Today, neither of us accomplished much. After I spent some time wrestling with the setup of the bedroom unit, I sat down and explained to Dad how to use the whole blasted thing - with one rule to observe: there is to be NO rewinding to replay scenes, while viewing movies. Besides that, he can record anything he wants.

And now, just 24 hours after getting the DVR, we have (in our LIST of recorded items) the following:

  • Swiss Family Robinson
  • Eragon
  • Charlie Wilson's War
  • Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
  • Pollyanna
  • The Christmas Carol
  • Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone
  • Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
  • Harry Potter and the Prince of Azkaban
  • Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire
  • Harry Potter and The Order of the Pheonix
  • Geraldo (Episode about O.J. Simpson)
Do you see a pattern here? These do NOT include the things we cancelled, deleted or otherwise changed our minds about.

Oh, and (to the chagrin of certain nameless family members) we once again, have FOX news.

Dad really missed it.

At least I have the bedroom unit so I can escape.

God bless us, every one.

Bailey's condo

A month ago I bought Andy a new bed - one with a little hood over it - and Bailey loves it. Sometimes, when Dad gets up in the morning, he finds Bailey asleep in it and Andy someplace else.

So I went to Pet's Mart and got Bailey her own bed, a kitty condo, that she can sleep and in call her own.

I gave it to her last night and she immediately liked it. This morning, at 5 AM, Dad says she was in it. When I got up at 6:45, she was still in it. When I got home at 4 PM, she was still in it. Then we went to dinner, and came back around 8 PM. Bailey was still there. We wondered if she ever even came out to go to the toilet.

She loves her bed. It is right outside my bedroom door, her favorite spot. The only thing I am worried about is, since she slept all day, what is she going to do all night tonight?

Public Art (?)

One would wonder what precicely defines art. The newest craze in art appears to be living human figures posing for the public. It is called a "Mob Freeze" and people all over the world are doing it.

Ok, you all thought I was weird. Michelle and William have topped me this time.

How it works is, everyone makes a 'date' to do the freeze in a particular location. They converse about this in a number of ways, including Facebook, text messaging and phones. There is NO signal at the 'freeze' location other than someone in the mob who just 'freezes' then everyone else follows suit. They stand completely still for 3 minutes.

If you look closely at this video (even pause it) you can make out Michelle and William. At about 5 seconds you will start to see someone holding a pink and while umbrella - that is Michelle. Next to her a little ways off (on the steps) is a tall person with a beanie pulled down over his face. You are correct to guess that is our nerdy William. I have a feeling that they both had a lot of fun doing this; so are thousands of people around the world. I just read about another one in Beirut and Michelle says there is one in New York.

Bedtime entertainment

Dad rolled over about 2 am, with a soft green light shining in his eyes.

"What are you doing?" he mumbled, as he pulled his pillow over his head.

"I can't sleep. So I'm playing a game."

He groaned. "You are SO weird."

Ok, so I like Klondike and Yukon. So what?

Dad reminded me that I hadn't posted anything in a while. It isn't much, but at least it tells you what I am doing at the moment.

Oh yeah, I am in CA right now. Guess you figured that out.

the Irish have it

The sky's the limit in Dublin, Ohio. It was fun spending a few days with Luke, Katie and Stevie over the weekend.

I learned a little about Dublin. It's not just the neighborhoods I like, but community life. Homes and even apartment buildings are really attractive.
Stevie's is nice, and within walking distance of all sorts of food places and shops.

There is a river running right through the city, with a lovely drive. The trees were all shedding leaves, and you could see the water. In the spring where I was there, we got to see the canoe races. Bike paths are everyplace, and people care about fitness; they actually use the bike paths regularly.

Dublin has an annual
Irish Festival so large, the grass dies from so much foot traffic. It's about 2 blocks from Luke's house. All the man hole covers have shamrocks on them. Each year, there is an award ceremony where they honor people nominated as Grand Leprechaun. It's quite amusing. On St. Patrick's day they have this huge parade; there is already a complete plan for the one in 2009. I thought this town was Irish, but it doesn't even compare to Dublin. They even have the 2009 Irish Festival all planned for August, 2009. I want to go.

Stevie's place of employment, Jason's Restaurant and Bar, is right in the middle of town, with all these little shops everyplace. It's so cute. Dad and I had a really good time this weekend, I think he liked it, too. Plus, he got to go with Luke when he bought the new bike; letting Katie off the hook.

Having family around has it's benefits, sometimes.

Ladybug, Ladybug

Ladybug, Ladybug
Get out of my home
This place is for me,
You need to be gone.

If you come in my house
You'll meet a harsh end
I really don't care
If you're a farmer's best friend.
--------

In case you are confused, I have a ladybug infestation. Thousands of them are swarming the west side of the house, squeezing through cracks and getting into the light fixtures.

I went outside to see if I could stop their entrance. They got all over me; in my hair, up my nose, in my clothes. I got fed up. I got out the Diazinon and sprayed the west side of the house down, hoping to kill them. Somehow, they are still getting in.

This is not my own photo, but I will get one later. This is one I found on Flickr. Apparently I am not the only one having this problem.

I love gadgets

This is the handy-dandy Apple-Peeler-Corer-Slicer, a contraption concocted who knows when, could have been invented a hundred years ago. Technology in the kitchen, even then.

It is hand operated, peels and cores fruits, such as apples or pears, as well as slicing them, all at once.

It can also peel potatoes, by just moving the coring part of the machine aside.

Mae has an apple tree, golden delicious, so I brought some home. Her apples always taste so good with dinner, I had to make some myself.

I don't really like apple pie, but I love Apple Butter, and cooked apples with dinner. And the smell is intoxicating.

Gadgets make everything taste better.

Deceased and Replaced

Since Michelle's beloved car is no more, a few of us had to make some adjustments. Stevie bought the Mitsubishi, and with the insurance monies from Michelle's car (which was also mine) I bought a new/used car.

It's very nice. It has all the luxury items on it that I wanted, including heated seats and a remote starter. I thought you all might like to see a picture of it. A Chevy Malibu LX. It is grey, but it has a very slight greenish tint to it, which I love. Inside is light grey cloth. It has a 5 CD changer and satellite radio (which I will never use). Everything is adjustable.

We aren't sure what Michelle and William will do when they get home, but at least they still have their truck. It isn't as nice as their Toyota was, but it runs. Sorry (but thanks) Michelle. :)

Ode to Creme Brule

Oh how I love thee, Creme Brule
You stole my affections this very day
Your soft, warm center, your toasted top
Your buttery sweetness, I just can't stop!
Of all confections, for this I prey
I love thee, O glorious Creme Brule!

Do not disturb

Andy got a new bed. He has slept under the bed all summer so now is used to NOT sleeping in bed with me.

Dad says he sleeps under the bed when I'm gone, or in the living room in his doggie bed. We decided that, in order to keep him on the floor we would get another bed to go in our room.

As you can see he is very proud and has no time for disturbances.

Small stuff

Have you ever had guava?

Neither had I, until this year, when our guava tree decided to bear fruit.

The poor little tree isn't more than 4 feet tall (if that) and nearly died during last year's 20 degree CA weather. But thanks to the heat of this year, it is now bearing fruit; about 4 to 5 ripe guavas a day. We now have about 10 in the fruit bowl, even though I serve one a day and cut one up in Dad's lunch salad.

Guava aren't the most attractive fruit. It is difficult to tell when they are ripe, they turn slightly yellow just before they fall off the tree, and are slightly squishy to touch (like a ripe peach). But they smell good, much better than their pukey smelling cousin, the papaya. I have been serving them sliced, next to our meat and vegetables and that seems to be a nice balanced meal addition. I am really not sure what else to do with them. They do have tiny seeds, and you can't really see them but they are hard and if you bite a seed without expecting it, you could break a tooth or a filling.

Maggie has just discovered that I am picking them, which now makes them desirable. There might not be as many on the tree, now that she noticed I want them. She does tend to eat the avocados because of that. Or, maybe they just taste good.

Save money; cure a cold...

I hate having a summer cold. Sore throat, drippy nose, stuffy head. UGH!

I also hate to be sick when it is 100 degrees outside. Who can drink hot tea with temperatures like that?

So, I concocted a coffee drink (to replace my famous cold remedy) which tastes a lot like drinks from various coffee shops. Plus, it saves about $4 a glass.

The key to this drink? Sweetened condensed milk and, of course, brandy.

  1. Get a large glass. Put in about 1/2 cup of this morning's coffee.
  2. Stir in about a tablespoon of Sweetened Condensed Milk (I use the low-fat). Stir briskly until blended.
  3. Fill with yesterday's coffee (I chill mine in a jar for this drink) or use the rest of the coffee from this morning.
  4. Put in a generous shot of brandy (I use EJ's E.S.O.P. Superior). If you like the flavor of Hazelnut in your coffee, add a half shot of Frangelica. It is also very tasty with some Buttershots, but I didn't have any today.
  5. Add ice. Drink with a straw. It might not cure the sore throat but it helps not to feel it so much. :-D
YUM! I feel better already.

Dueling Snaps

Andy's really glad I am home. He loves salmon with Parmesan topping. He hasn't had leftovers in months.

Of course, he doesn't (so much) like to have me touch the pan while he is eating. Notice as he snaps at me, while I snap a shot of him. Believe me, he wasn't amused.

Snips and Snails...

What's the old poem? What are little boys made of? Well, this is proof, at least for our little guy. He is all about puppy dog's tails from now 'till Halloween.

Probably longer, if he takes after his mother.

(you can blame Nana for this)

Sugar and Spice

...and a bit of pink lace, that's what this little girl is made of.

Just wait, though, until she can wear a Ladybug outfit.

Atlanta International

Oh, do I ever love Atlanta!!!! so international, and so amazing. I am actually in an area called Alpharetta, just north of the city. Sort of reminds me of Orange county in a way.

Tonight I had tandoori chicken from India. When the plate of food comes, the cast iron plate is so hot, the onions are sizzling and stay that way for 10 minutes.

There are so many little Indian places here and tandoori has to be one of the best things I have ever had, especially as chicken; it is marinated in yogurt, lemon juice, and plenty of spices, then grilled or broiled with onions, large juicy slices. I think they marinate the chicken in the yogurt for 8 hours or so. I am going to have to learn to make this. I just wish I had known what to order it with; I didn't get any sides (not that I had room to eat them).

Last night I had Turkish food, lamb and some feta/veggie salad that was awesome. I missed the belly dancing though :-( because I got lost and so ended up at the Turkish place instead of the Indian place (which I went to tonight). Belly dancing is an entertainment they provide Thursday through Sunday. Oh well, if you ever come to visit me in Nashville we can drive up to Atlanta and spend a few days. After the Olympics it has dramatically changed, becoming more or less the 'Seattle of the South' - highly international, cultural and only a shadow of southern life left. You can't even tell you are in Georgia. You can even buy wine in the stores!!

Don't you just love a warm bath?

Unless your name is Andy.

Slim & trim

Andy has lost weight since Michelle and I aren't around to give him left overs. He has dropped 6.5 pounds! Think about the percentage that is to his size. Doesn't he look energetic?

Be careful what you wish

Yesterday it rained. Big time - 2.92" according to the official report in Humphreys County.

It wasn't a windy storm, just heavy rain all night and all day. Today was clear, a good day to work outside.

There was this loud C-R-A-C-K. Then the billie goats went running.

A large hickory tree in the goat pen decided its branches were too heavy from all the rain, so a large branch just broke right off. They had been trying to climb one of the other trees from some leaves.

Looks like they got their wish. This branch should keep them busy a few days.

Goats will climb anything

We took the goats a bale of hay yesterday. Of course, goats love to climb, but I had not idea they would be able to climb a round bale on its side, over five feet high.

They kept butting each other off. I think I need to build them a jungle-jim.

Lock me up

My mother told me that the locks would be boring. I am glad I didn't listen to her.

Nothing new there.

Visiting the locks was incredible. Sault Ste Marie is so interesting. Established in 1688 , it is the 3rd oldest continuous settlement in the US
(I don't remember learning that in Michigan history).

Technology has been a part of life in this area since 1797, when the first lock (Canadian) was established. The first American lock was built in 1855. Today there are four locks in use. They allow ships to pass from the Atlantic Ocean, past St. Mary's rapids and into Lake Superior.
We went through 2 locks. The first (pictured above) shows the gate from inside the US lock, and the passage way toward Canada (see the bridge in the background?).

To get our boat raised up high enough to enter Lake Superior, we entered the lock at about 12 (or maybe 14 feet) depth. Then the gates closed and water was added, raising our level. We ended up at about 48 feet. Then the gate opened.

We traveled past the steel production plant, under the International bridge, then around and back through the Canadian lock (now only used for pleasure craft - no shipping boats).

Entering the Canadian lock you can see we are at Lake Superior level.

After the gates close, water empties out - over a million gallons - and lowers us to Lake Huron. Notice the water level from the discolored sides of the interior walls.

There is a nice little animation on the USACE website, that shows how the locks operate, if you are interested.
